2005 Benegas Lynch Meritage

Benegas A Proprietary Blend Dry Red Table wine
from Mendoza, Argentina

SOURCE Wine Advocate #180 Dec 2008
REVIEWER Jay Miller
MATURITY Drink: 2011-2020
CURRENT RELEASE COST $48.- (48)

The 2005 Benegas Lynch – Meritage is composed of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. Dark ruby-colored, it offers an appealing nose of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, cassis, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with layers of savory fruit, excellent depth and concentration, fine balance, and a pure finish. Give it 3-4 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2011 to 2020.

The Benegas estate vineyards are located in the Maipu region of Mendoza. The Benegas family has been involved in the Argentine wine business since 1883 and was a pioneer in introducing French varietals to Argentina. Their Finca Libertad estate has old vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, and Syrah, but, interestingly, no Malbec. The specialty of the house is Bordeaux-style wine from their old-vine parcels. Benegas is currently run by the fourth generation of the family with Michel Rolland providing consultation.

GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION

Libertad Vineyard is located on the Upper Mendoza Riverbank, in the Maipú region, Mendoza. This land was chosen by Tiburcio Benegas at the beginning of the century to plant the vines he brought to Argentina, mostly from France.
Our winery is located in the Luján de Cuyo region, carril Aráoz (off route 60), 300 meters from its intersection with the south access to Mendoza, and at 5 kilometers from Libertad Vineyard.

The departments of Maipú and Luján de Cuyo are considered the regions responsible for producing the best quality wines of Argentina. The finest vineyards and wineries combine in this area their vinicultural traditions with last generation wine-elaboration and wine-growing technologies.

These regions are located on the foothills of the Andes, between 750 and 1100 meters above sea level. The vines grow up receiving the fresh glacial melting waters that comes down the Mendoza River, descending from the Andes mountains. Ecologically, the Upper Mendoza Riverbank is a true oasis for cultivating the finest grapes.

THE PROVINCE OF MENDOZA

In the west side of Argentina, bordering with Chile, stands the province of Mendoza, worldwide famous for its excellent wines. This province produces nearly 70% of the wines made in the country. Argentina is the world's 5th largest wine producer.
Mendoza, the "land of sun and good wine", as it is usually called, is the most important viticulture region of the country. Besides, viticulture represents one of the most significant economic activities of the province. During the last decades, this sector has reached a high degree of development, which evidences in the improvement of vines and technology.
The glaciers at the top of the mountains supply the necessary water to water the fruit-trees plantations and vineyards, from which the famous Argentine wines are produced. Wine and its production are the grounds for a tradicional festivity in the Province and the whole country: the National Vintage Festivity..

From the beginning, the Benegas focussed their efforts on the production of quality wines. Tiburcio, and later his son, Pedro, brought fine low production vines mainly from France. They planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay, which were the base for the famous Broquel, Fond de Cave and Puente Viejo. Although the pebble soils were poor, they no doubt proved adequate for optimal development of the vines.

As the French have demonstrated through their long history in wine production, a vineyard starts to show its magnificence in the wines it produces after 30 years of cultivation. For this reason, Federico J. Benegas Lynch, following the calling of his early years, devoted himself to perform a thorough and comprehensive work to restore the old vines to their former splendor. Today, Libertad has a Cabernet Franc of approximately 80 years, a Cabernet Sauvignon of 40 to 60 years, a Sangiovese of 50 years and the most recent vineyard, a strip of land of Merlot of about 20 years.

Until the 70's, when the family company was dissolved, Benegas was the only owner in Argentina of Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Syrah. This last variety was brought from the Rhone Valley.
The vines are vertically trellised to increase sunlight exposure, except for Chardonnay (25 years), which is planted on vine arbors. There, the shade of the leaves themselves refreshen the grapes, thus producing a refined aromatic wine.

It is well known that 60% of the quality of the wine depends both on the vineyard and on the combination of plants, soil and climate.
